As your photographer, I believe that educating my clients is an essential part of the process. This includes providing information on what to expect during the photo session, styling, and preparation before the photo session. I have developed six qualities that make a good photographer.

1. Attention to Detail

One important skill is being detail-oriented. A good photographer has an eye for detail, which is crucial during the photo shoot and post-production editing. Being detail-oriented ensures that nothing is missed, resulting in exceptional images.

2. Creativity & imagination

Creativity is also important. A talented photographer can envision their subject in many different ways, making each shot appear new and original. Inspiration from other artists can help, but it is essential to create your art and execute your vision. So please DO NOT COPY other photographers’ work, be original and authentic.

3.Storytelling

Photography is an art that requires the use of one’s creative capabilities to the fullest extent. An image with context is always more interesting than a picture without it. When creating an idea, it’s crucial to consider the topic from various angles. To make an image stand out from the crowd and elicit an emotional response, it’s important to provide context. Since storytelling is fundamental to the profession of photography, the ability to do it effectively is an indispensable skill for a good photographer to possess.

4.Business Acumen

A good photographer must also have a business mindset to market their venture and attract potential clients. This includes professionalism, time management, and coordination throughout the photo session. Understanding of intellectual property this knowledge enables them to protect their images from unauthorized use.

5.Communication Skills

Great communication skills are essential in the service-based photography industry. Listening to a client’s needs and concerns, asking the right questions, and acting promptly on client requests are part of a photographer’s job. Clear written communication is also vital, as clients may not always be available for in-person meetings.

6.Technical Skills

Lastly, having technical skills is necessary. A professional photographer should have a thorough understanding of cameras, lighting, and photo editing software to execute post-production work.Being a good photographer is not just about mastering your camera or owning the latest and most expensive camera gear. It’s about having the inherent qualities that enable you to see beauty in the most unexpected places and capture that beauty in a photograph.

As I mentioned in my other blog post on What makes a good Photographer? “it depends on your vision as a client and the type of photo session you’re looking for. Every photography session demands different desirable qualities. However, having these qualities is a formidable skill that can make a photographer stand out from the rest.
